Watch Out for the New Form I-9
A new Form I-9 took effect as of April 3, 2009.  The Form I-9 is to be completed by all new employees in the US and kept on file by employers.  It has new requirements as to what documents may be used to prove that an employee is allowed to work in the US.

If you use the old version after April 3, expect to complete new I-9 forms so that you can prove compliance with the new requirements.  It will also be wise to see how the form changes after June 30, 2009, when the current version is due to expire.  For the latest version of the I-9 form and other details, visit the website for the US Customs & Immigration Service at www.uscis.gov

Wanted: ‘Whole-Minded’ Leadership Teams
An economic downturn will reveal personnel and other weaknesses in an organization.  As the investor Warren Buffett famously noted “Only when the tide goes out, do we discover who has been swimming naked”

The ‘Whole-Minded’ leadership team is how the Cognosis Consultancy describes a leadership team that balances four different qualities.  Leveraging all four qualities can result in strategies and solutions that are better created, communicated and implemented.

Since no one person has a balance of all four qualities, the ‘Whole-Minded’ approach looks to build a team that does.  Whether you’re assessing the management of a larger company or a
smaller project, look for each of these four qualities:

•    Rational: Thorough, fact-based analysis, to set clear goals and outcomes

•    Practical: Focus on resources and implementation, to get from concept to delivery

•    Collaborative: Active asking and listening, to capture client and implementers’ views

•    Creative: Imagination and insights, to create new visions and options

If there is a lack of one or more qualities, the team will have better chances of success when that lack is corrected.  Options include hiring outside talent, whether permanently or as consultants, as well as looking internally at transfers, promotions and temporary assignments.
