Informational Interviewing - 5 Ways to Prepare
Most jobseekers find their next job by networking, with estimates ranging from 65% to 85%. Informational interviewing is a key activity, whether or not you’re familiar with the employer, industry or role under consideration.  It can happen either in person or by phone, and is a relaxed way to exchange information that helps your job search.

Since you’ve requested the meeting, you must be prepared. Career consultant Richard Kirby of Executive Impact (richard.5rules@gmail.com ) suggests 5 ways to maximize your chances of success before you begin.

1: Before you talk, research as much as possible about the employer and the industry

2: Likewise, find out as much as you can about the person’s business and personal interests

3: Use your research to target the questions you want answered, and write them down

4: Identify what you can contribute, such as news of a mutual contact or other information

5: Have ready a short ‘elevator speech’ about yourself, your strengths and accomplishments

After you’ve talked, as with all forms of networking, be sure to send a thank you note, along with any promised follow-up information, and to keep informed whoever first referred you.
